Due to the spread of the new Corona virus (COVID - 19) - officially declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) yesterday, many sporting events around the world have been postponed or cancelled indefinitely.
Owing to the decision of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia and based on the recommendations of the Interagency Council established by the Prime Minister of Georgia - Giorgi Gakharia, and the Ministry of Health of Georgia, the sporting events in Georgia have been temporarily suspended and all sports organisations have been advised not to organize any sports competitions, trainings, seminars and workshops, or any amass any social gatherings that may support spreading the virus.
Sports Events officially ceased at this time: Georgian Football Championships, as well as national age championships, Georgian National and Age Rugby Championships, Handball Championships, Age Basketball Championships and many more.
According to a joint decision of the Government of Georgia and the Rugby Union, the match between Georgia and Russia, scheduled for March 14 at the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium, will be held unanswered. The International Judo Federation (IJF) has officially canceled the Judo Grand Prix to be held at the Tbilisi Olympic Palace on March 27-29.
Furthermore, many international tournaments were planned in March which would attract Georgian athletes, however, with the decision of the relevant international federations and the recommendation of the World Health Organization, these events were canceled or postponed. Consequently, our athletes stopped training and returned home.
