The Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia, Mikheil Chkhenkeli visited the Aleksandre Tsutsunava Professional State Drama Theater in Ozurgeti and inspected the newly renovated building. The Minister congratulated the theater's artistic director, and cast members on the renovated building, wishing it success and creative advancement.
Mikheil Chkhenkeli: "The complete rehabilitation of the Ozurgeti Professional State Theater was funded by the Cartu Foundation and as a result we now have a magnificent building where all the conditions are created for actors, directors and all employees. I would like to congratulate all of them on the new building and wish them creative success.”
Ozurgeti Professional State Drama Theater was fully rehabilitated with the support of the Cartu Foundation. The only professional theater in the Guria region will start the new theatrical season in September in a brand new building.
Ozurgeti Theater is equipped with modern standards. It has two full-fledged scenes, several rehearsal rooms, new dressing rooms, a radio studio to record radio performances, and more. The building is adapted to modern standards, and is also fully adapted to serve the needs of people with disabilities.
Rehabilitation of the theater began in September 2016 and was completed in July 2020, with an overall budget of GEL 18,000,000. It is noteworthy that 120 people were employed on the construction and rehabilitation works of the theater.
Ozurgeti Theater was built in 1961 and is one of the largest buildings in Georgia. It is an important cultural building and is considered a business card of Ozurgeti. Theatrical art in Ozurgeti dates back to 1868 and since then this process has not ceased to exist. Alexander Tsutsunava, the founder of Georgian professional directing, named after the Ozurgeti Theater, was the founder of the theater in Ozurgeti.
