The First Group of Foreign Teachers Arrived in Georgia

Minister of Education and Science, Dimitri Shashkini met the foreign teachers at the Tbilisi International Airport who arrived in Georgia in the framework of the educational program “Teach And Learn With Georgia” in order to get involved in the education process together with the local teachers from the new academic year. English language teachers of Georgian public schools will master new teaching methods and approaches together with foreign teachers.

Initiator of the new project that envisages recruiting 1,000 native English speaker teachers is the Government of Georgia. Registration of the volunteer teachers is being carried out from March 1, 2010 on the website www.tlg.gov.ge . This site was specially created for this program. Foreign volunteer   teachers have an opportunity to apply as well as find the whole information about Georgia, its history and culture on the site.

The first group of 50 teachers arrived in Georgia on July 31. They will get familiarized with our country during the two months and learn Georgian language if they wish. Foreign teachers will get involved in the education process from the new academic year. The educational program covers almost half of the schools of Georgian cities and villages. Among them are small schools as well. Specialists of English language will arrive from the USA, England, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and countries of Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. 

Implementation of the project was available based on the experience of an American Organization “Peace Corps” that has been carrying activities in Georgia since 2001 and recruits American volunteers every year. Volunteers work in the public schools of Georgia together with the Georgian teachers for two years.

By the announcement of Dimitri Shashkini, “Teach and Learn for Georgia” is an important program for the opportunity that Native English speakers teach the English language to Georgian schoolchildren as well as these volunteers return back in their countries as the ambassadors of Georgia and highlight Georgian rich history, ongoing democratic reforms, Georgian culture and traditions in their countries.
