The Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Mikheil Chkhenkeli congratulates the public  on the Mother Language Day:

"Today we celebrate one of the most important dates in the modern history of Georgia – the Mother Language Day.

42 years ago, on April 14, 1978, the population of Georgia rebelled against the Soviet Union's intention to deprive the Georgian language of its state language status. The massive peaceful protest demonstration of the population has preserved the state language, which is indeed an event of great, state importance and magnitude.

I express my great respect and gratitude to the people who four decades ago, at great risk, defended and preserved the mother tongue - a unique Georgian language with a centuries-old history for future generations.

Caring for the Georgian language is one of the main priorities of the state, as the mother tongue is not only the language we speak and communicate, but also it is the mother tongue that is a prerequisite for the country's identity, unity and peaceful development."
