The Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Mikheil Chkhenkeli, opened the online event of Horizon Europe Information Day, where experts from the European Commission and representatives of the Ministry discussed the general structure of the program, funding schemes and opportunities for participation.

In his speech, Mikheil Chkhenkeli thanked the European Union and the European Commission for their fruitful cooperation, long-term support for the development of the education system in Georgia and for creating numerous opportunities for Georgian scientists and students. The Minister spoke about Georgia's association with the Horizon Europe program, which, he said, would have significant long-term results and enhance Georgia's integration into the European Union.

Mikheil Chkhenkeli: “In light of COVID-19 pandemic, the role of science and research became more apparent. Our efforts are aimed at making Georgia a major destination for science. The establishment of Kutaisi International University is a great step forward in this regard.”

Mikheil Chkhenkeli noted that Georgia's association with the EU Framework Program is the basis for creating quality scientific research in our country. Horizon Europe will create unique opportunities for the Georgian academic community. Georgian scientists will be able to collaborate with leading EU research institutes, develop new scientific ideas, gain the highest European experience and host outstanding foreign scientists.

The Minister of Education and Science praised Georgia's association with the 8th EU Framework Program for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020) and noted that, since 2016, this ambitious and large-scale program has enabled Georgian scientists to improve research opportunities, increase the quality of scientific research and introduce innovative, collaborative research in Georgia.

Signe Ratso, Deputy Director General (Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, European Commission) delivered a welcoming speech at the online event. Moreover, European Commission experts Manfred Spiesberger and George Bonas held informative presentations on the Horizon Europe program.

It is noteworthy that Georgia is currently undergoing association procedures for the Horizon Europe Framework Program. All activities announced under this program are available to Georgian science, as Georgia is an associate country of the previous EU Framework Program (Horizon 2020).
