The Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Mikheil Chkhenkeli, while presenting the ten-year plan for the development of education and science, spoke about the development prospects of the mega-project - Kutaisi International University and noted that a hub of regional education and science will be established in Kutaisi in a few years.

According to the Minister, the International Advisory Board, which includes well-known and leading scientists from around the world, plays an important role in the strategic development of Kutaisi International University.

As for the current academic programs at the university, they are analogous to the Technical University of Munich. The existing approach will be maintained and academic programs for all three levels of higher education will be gradually established at Kutaisi International University in cooperation with the leading university in a specific field. Famous foreign professors are involved in the academic life of the university together with their Georgians peers, the number of which will gradually increase. As a result, a hub of regional importance for education and science will be established in Kutaisi, which will be in line with European standards.

Mikheil Chkhenkeli emphasized that the establishment of the university is an event of great importance in terms of internationalization of education and science. The author of the idea and concept of the university belongs entirely to Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili. It was as a result of his and his family's extremely important charity that a world-wide academic and scientific-research space emerged in the country.

A Hadron Therapy Center will be established on the premises of Kutaisi International University, which is funded by the Cartu Foundation. The centre will house two cyclotrons, which are currently being manufactured by one of the world's leading companies (IBA). One cyclotron is used to treat cancer, which is especially important for children with cancer. Treatment will be possible with an ultra-modern method - proton therapy - this is a form of radiation therapy that fights only damaged cells, while healthy cells remain harmless. The second cyclotron will be used for research in medical and nuclear physics. These studies will be carried out by well-known foreign scientists together with the Georgian counterparts. Consequently, the Hadron Therapy Center will become a scientific hub of world importance.
