Ministers held a Meeting on Introduction of Sport Classes at Schools
27.01.2010
Minister of Education and Science Dimitri Shashkini, Minister of Culture, Monument Protection and Sports Nikoloz Rurua, Head of Sports and Youth Department David Namgalauri, as well as representatives of the sport federations held a working meeting on introduction of sport classes at public schools. The participants discussed the ways of introducing this subject by taking into account the abilities and interests of each student during this process.

“With this initiative we will reach one of the main goals of the reform – high school students will adopt a healthy life style. New curriculum reflecting the changes of replacing the physical culture classes with sports classes will be ready in April. At the first stage, 50 pilot schools will be selected. Starting from a new academic year, September 2010, sport classes will be introduced in all public schools throughout Georgia”, the Minister said.

The initiative of the President of Georgia concerning introduction of sport classes at schools aims at popularizing sport among the youth. Though out of 2179 public schools, 1569 have indoor sport and 2015 have outdoor sport facilities, the physical culture classes are still unpopular among high schools students. Therefore, physical culture classes will be replaced by Sport classes.
