Succesful Initiatives of inclusive education for 2012

The Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia is carrying out two important projects with the support of the Ministry of Education and Research of Norway and “Save the Children”. These projects are: Education Reform for the Deaf and Strengthening of University Component”. Activities conducted in 2012 were summarized today in Teacher House.

Activities of the past period in the framework of education reform for the deaf are as follows:

  • legislative amendment regarding gesture language
  • Creation of textbooks for children with hearing impediments
  • 3-level courses of gesture language conducted for school teachers
  • professional development of teachers
  • Rehabilitation of Schools (#203, #45) for the deaf and those with hearing impediment and recruitment of more specialists.
  • Creation of a model for Education of the deaf.
  • Strengthening of education for the deaf component for future teachers on university level etc.

In order to strengthen inclusive and special education on university level, Ilia State University will implement MA program for special teachers. This will be a good opportunity to develop directions such as behavior management, teaching children with sight deficiency, hearing and other impediments etc.

The presentation was attended by the representatives of non-governmental sector, international organizations, Public Defender’s office, Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association and donors from USAID, UNIICEF.
