Seminar on Higher Education Reforms

Professor Tassilo Schmitt from the University of Bremen visited Georgia with the invitation of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia. Foreign expert conducted a seminar on the issues of University management in order to share international experience. 

Minister of Education and Science of Georgia Tamar Sanikidze participated in the working process of the seminar. Rectors of State higher education institutions and heads of Administration, members of higher education system management and development consultation group, representatives of National Academy of Sciences, Committee on Education, non-governmental organizations, international foundations, Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation and Tempus Office attended the seminar.

The following issues were discussed during the Seminar:

  • University autonomy: historical and legal basics
  • Legal status of state universities, system of funding and administration
  • Advisory bodies of higher education institution: risk to or guarantees of autonomy
  • Management of Higher Education Institution: purpose and competences
  • Principles of teaching and research unity
  • Meeting of rectors etc

Seminars, discussions and work meeting will continue in future. Professor Niklaus Largier of the University of Berkeley is planning a visit to Georgia in the middle of August.
