Project for pupils with special educational needs successfully ended

National Curriculum Department of the Ministry of Education and Science was implementing a project “Sport for pupils with special educational needs” with the financial support of UNICEF. Participation of pupils with special educational needs in sports lessons and other sports activities, as well as giving equal availability to them was the main goal of the project. . Implementation of the project started in 2011-2012 and ended in 2013. 114 teachers, special teachers and psychologists from 20 pilot schools in Tbilisi and 35 pilot schools in the regions of Georgia were trained within the framework of the project.  They were trained by an inclusive education consultant and a sports expert.

Work meetings and seminars with teachers, pupils with special educational needs as well as their parent were being conducted during the year. Individual curricula were developed based on the National Curriculum and needs of each pupil. These curricula will be used in future for sports lessons. A competition of the best sports lesson was held within the program. Six winning teachers were awarded with money prizes.

Adaptive sports equipment purchased within the framework of the project were given to 15 pilot schools throughout Georgia, a guideline for school teachers “Sport for pupils with special educational needs”, flesh album reflecting the course of the program and results and recommendations on usage of adaptive equipment were prepared.

The event was attended by Natia Jokhadze, Head of National Curriculum Department, and representatives from UNICEF, different State bodies, non-governmental organizations and Tbilisi public schools.
