The Minister visited the schools of Pankisi Gorge

The Minister of Education and Science of Georgia Tamar Sanikidze, Deputy Minister Lia Gigauri and Governor of Kakheti irakli Shiolashvili visited several schools of Pankisi Gorge and introduced school projects to the students, their parents and teachers. Authorities of the Ministry also answered the questions of representatives of Gorge and examined their requirements. Within the event, the schools also received literature for the libraries and computers.

7 schools function in Pankisi Gorge with 1430 students and 183 teachers. Ethnic Kists and Chechens are studying in 5 of these schools. Learning process is in Georgian Language, there is a Russian sector in one of the schools. 5 schools are involved in the “Subprogram of Accessibility of Schools”, accordingly the students of these schools are provided with the transportation services. During 2013-2014 three schools of the Gorge were partially rehabilitated, 2 schools are fully restored. Also, schools are provided with new equipment, all public schools are provided with internet services.

Based on the requirements provided by the schools and needs that were discovered by the infrastructure service of the Ministry, additional infrastructural projects are planned for the schools of Pankisi Gorge in 2015. As for the school projects, at this stage, the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia will finance 6 school projects presented by the schools of Pankisi Gorge:

  • School of Duisi- “Study of felt processing” and “arts education” (groups of folk dance and singing);
  • School of Dumasturi – “Discover a talented football player” (football group) and “Learn the Art” (groups for folk singing and dancing);
  • School of Birkiani –“Arts education” (groups for folk singing and dancing);
  • School of Jokolo - Arts education” (groups for folk singing and dancing);
  • All schools of the Gorge will be involved in the project “Cinema in Schools”, which is implemented by the Ministry of Education with the Ministry of Monument Protection of Georgia.

Funding of additional six projects for the above mentioned and other two schools is planned.

School life in Pankisi Gorge is as accomplished as in any other schools in Georgian cities or villages. The students from Pankisi participate in various programs and contests organized by the Ministry, also they successfully participate in the United National Exams. Two schools out of five have certified directors, the teachers also participate in the certificate exams, also they are having trainings in Tbilisi as well as locally, organized by Teacher’s House.
