The ministry of education and science of Georgia holds about 20 Olympiads and competitions every year, where a great number of students of general education institutions are involved. This year, the number of participants is up to 130 000. The contestants pass several stage qualifying rounds and deal with difficult tasks. The best ones are involved in international competitions.
One of the most successful projects is National Education Olympiad, which is operated by the ministry of education and science of Georgia with National Center of Assessment and Examination and Shota Rustaveli National Science fund. The pupils do the contest in three stages. And on the basis of third stage results, the participants for international Olympiads are chosen.
23 tenth graders studying at public and private schools were determined as beneficiaries of Georgian team, 5 of them were from regions. They took part in the following international Olympiads: 56th International Olympiad in Mathematics (IMO) in Thailand (Chiang Mai); 46th International Physics Olympiad (IPHO) in India; 27th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Kazakhstan; 26th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in Denmark; 47th International Chemistry Olympiad in (ICHO), Azerbaijan (Baku).
The world’s 100 different countries participate in the international Olympiads. Competition requirements get difficult year by year. Despite this fact, Georgian participants compete honorably and they are not far behind the international level players. This year, they received 1 silver and 7 bronze medals. 4 pupils deserved honorable deeds.
The minister of education and science of Georgia Tamar Sanikidze and director of Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation Marine Chitashvili met the team members of international school Olympiads and their tutors. They expressed gratitude for productive work, handed deeds and wished success in the future.
Participant pupils succeed in international Olympiads were given money award by the ministry: silver medal holders were given 2000 GEL, bronze medal holders -1000GEL. This kind of encouragement is a way to stimulate as school life as well as to identify talented pupils.
The ministry aims to encourage pupils and implements numerous contests and projects besides the international Olympiads. The competitions have different subjects and all of them are attractive as for the pupils interested in Exact and Natural sciences as well as for the students gifted with inventive talent. The competitions attract pupils keen on art, sport and etc.
The winners of different contests have been awarded in various forms. English language camp took place in Tskneti and Great Britain. The pupils had vacations and at the same time developed various skills in Bakuriani, Anaklia, Tskaltubo. The winners Young Inventors Competition were sent in USA to visit NASA center. Today, 30 pupils and their teachers are traveling to Poland to visit Copernicus Science Centre. The winners of the competition "Leonardo Da Vinci" will travel to Switzerland to visit CERN nuclear research laboratory.
Competitions organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia promotes discovering talented and successful students, which on the other hand increases motivation among pupils and develops their skills.
