New Initiatives and Challenges of the Education System for 2010-2011

The President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili held a meeting with the teachers and students of Adjara Region in Batumi №3 school and discussed new initiatives to be carried out within the education system for the years of 2010-2011.  These initiatives are:






  1. Achieving a high level of student attendance  at schools through
  • attaching a greater importance to the high school diploma,
  • obtaining a minimum competence score in 10 compulsory subjects  including in information technology , mathematics and physics, to get a high school diploma  through passing the exams at the National Examination  Centers ;
  • making the student’s attendance as one of the core components of students overall grading;
  • setting up a school self -government bodies;
  • promoting school Olympiads.

     2. Increasing  professional skills of teacher through;

  • starting the teachers certification process on a voluntary basis from July, 2010,
  •  raising the salaries of certified teachers,
  • encouraging  teachers professional development from the part of  the state,
  • enhancing institute of the mentors (teachers who are dealing with interns).
  1. Improvement of the Infrastructure through
  • engaging the local governance bodies in developing the infrastructure and rehabilitating schools, (successful example of Adjara region);
  •  transferring 20 million GEL from the central budget to the local budget;
  •  renovating school cafeterias –introducing outsourcing mechanism;
  • arranging school laboratories and libraries.
  1. Improving the  National Curriculum  through
  • introducing the sports classes instead of physical culture classes;
  • delivering computer science classes at schools;
  • developing  a culture studies as a discipline;
  •  promoting military-patriotic teachings at schools .
  1. Developing  the standards for school textbooks/manuals through
  • requiring strict attention to approval of textbooks
  • creating standards for school editions;
  • reducing cost of the school textbooks and forbidding their frequent changes.
  1. Developing a safe school concept through
  • introducing the institution of school guards
  • starting division of schools in three  levels in big cities,
  • introducing the credit card system at schools to prohibiting cash  flow in schools.
