Georgian Language Day

In regards to the “Georgian Language Day”, The Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, hosted a reception for educators, teachers and public figures. The importance, preservation and promotion of Georgian language, as well as the contribution of educators, and teaching of Georgian – as a foreign language were amongst the topics discussed by the Minister of Education and Science – Ms. Tamar Sanikidze; Mr. Zaza Abashidze – Director of National Center of Manuscripts, linguist – Avtrandil Arabuli, Ketevan Jakeli – Principal of LEPL Zurab Zhvania school for State Administration and Marika Odzeli – Georgian Language Department Director.

During the event, the Minister of Education and Science of Georgia – Ms. Tamar Sanikidze, awarded a respected teacher of  Georgian language at Public School № 203 – Ms. Lamara Buadze, a Kesalo public school teacher of Georgian language – Ms. Zeinab Ediberidze and a linguist – Mr. Avtandil Arabuli  with an honorary prize badge “Amadgari” for their successful teaching contribution. 
Taking care of Georgian language is one of the major priorities of Georgian government, thus controlling and protecting the correct usage of the language. Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia pursues its continuous effort to protect and develop Georgian language, in conjunction with working intensively to assist the with the teaching-learning process and to promote it. Georgian language at this stage is taught in three directions: Georgian – the native language, Georgian – the secondory language, and Georgian – the foreign language.  

Having the knowledge of the state language is a an important requirement for the civil integration of Georgia’s non-Georgian speaking citizens, in parallel, with maintaining the native languages for the ethnic minorities. In this respect, the Ministry of Education and Science is implementing numerous projects. It is important to indicate the key role and contribution of National Center for Teacher Professional Development and Zurab Zhvania School of State Administration to this cause.

In order to promote and help the foreigners to learn the Georgian language, the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia implemented a special program – “Irbakhi”, which provides the with educational –methodological and/or auxiliary material to anyone who desires to learn the language.
