Owing to the initiative of Ilia State University, the fifth scientific picnic was held. The event was organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, within the Science and Innovation Festival framework.

The Science Picnic is being held annually since 2012, and aims to promote and popularize science in Georgia. The main goal is to portray major scientific achievements, in an understandable, comprehensive way, especially achievements in natural sciences. The event is primarily designed for the school students.

Science Picnic in 2016 was attended by scientific groups from Georgia, as well as from the foreign countries (Poland, Israel). They set up 50 tents in the park, and conducted interesting and interactive experiments.
