International Francophonie and the French language Day was celebrated at the National Center for Teacher Professional Development. Lia Gigauri, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, took part in the event, organized by the French Institute of Georgia.

Pupils and students, winners of the French-language contests, organized by the French Institute of Georgia, were awarded at the event. Besides, two French language teachers were announced, who will undergo a short-term education traineeship in France on a French Government Scholarship.

Acting Ambassador of France to Georgia, Didier Lerois, Ambassador of Swiss Confederation to Georgia, Lucas Beglinger, as well as other representatives of diplomatic missions attended the event. French language professors and educators of universities and schools, their students and pupils were also in attendance.

International Organization of La Francophonie’s is made up of 57 member states and 20 observer states, including Georgia. The French language is spoken by one third of the population of the UN Member States. Besides, more than 220 million people speak French on five continents. The French speaking population is the second largest in Europe, following the German –speaking population.
