Georgian Chess Players’ Victory in European School Competition

The Minister of Education and Science, Dimitri Shashkini presented with portable computers the winners of Europe school competition, held in Salonika (Greece). Three winners among four are the schoolchildren of Kutaisi public school №21. Introducing the chess as the compulsory subject at this school in 2000 is to be highlighted. The result is amazing – all chess players who hold the medal are the children of this school. This fact confirms the future success of the project that envisages replacing the physical culture classes with sports lessons once again.

The Europe Competition was held among 4 age-groups in April, 2010. Around 1000 young sportsmen from 15 countries took participation in it.

The student of Kutaisi public school №21,the Champion of Georgia and the holder of the golden medal received in the world youngsters Olympiad, Zurab Dgavakhadze won the competition among the youngsters under 17. He will take participation in the world competition.

The student of Kutaisi public school №21, Ana Shamatava won two golden medals among the children of 14 and 15 ages. The holder of the bronze medal, Giga Darsavelidze is also the student of this school. Meri Arabidze - the winner of the world and Europe competitions, an international master, the student of Samtredia public school №3 took the third place among the children of 14-15 ages.

17,000 Gel was allocated for the schoolchildren participation in the international competition by the Ministry of Education and Science.

The National team was composed with the schoolchildren, who won the Georgian national school competition in 2009, carried out in the framework of the joint project of the Ministry of Education and Science and Georgian Chess Federation.

The Ministry will still encourage and support the talented schoolchildren.
