Georgian national team won all three medals at Judo World Championship, which ended in Baku, Azerbaijan, and took the fourth place among 124 countries participating in the event. Guram Tushishvili became world champion in 100 kg weight category, Varlam Liparteliani (-100 kg) won silver medal and Bronze medal was won by Amiran Papinashvili (-60 kg). It is worth mentioning that after 2014, it is the first time Georgia celebrates the World Championship in judo.
The Georgian delegation was represented by 9 athletes at the championship. Four of them were able to go to the final block. The most successful run was conducted by Guram Tushishvili, who won all the matches, including the final confrontation with Azerbaijani Ushangi Kokauri. Varlam Liparteliani lost one victory to the championship, against the Korean Guam Chose in the final. It should be noted that the captain of our team defeated Azeri national - Elmar Gasimov of Rio Olympics in the third round. Amiran Papinashvili won bronze medal with the victory against the host country representative - Karamat Huseynov.
The Japanese team was the most successful at the World Championship. Japanese gained 8 gold medals in total. The Japanese proved to be the most successful at team competiotion as well, in which Georgian national team did not participate. Tokyo, the capital of Japan will host the 2019 World Championship.
