"Today we have witnessed the most important announcement for the development of Georgian sport, today the International Basketball Association board of directors, have announced that Georgia will indeed host the group matches for the European 2021 Basketball Championship.” – Stated Mikheil Batiashvili today, at the special briefing.

On July 15, the International Basketball Association Board meeting in Munich revealed the names of the countries that will host the 2021 European Championships. Georgia has received the support of its board members and will host one of the European Team Matches in 2021. In total, 7 countries competed for the European Championship: Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Estonia and Georgia. The right to host the European Championship group stage have been bestowed to: Georgia, Germany, Italy and the Czech Republic. After the group stage, Germany will host the play-off matches.

“This is the greatest victory of Georgian basketball and our country, as it proves once again that we are full members of the European family!

It will be the 5th consecutive European Championship for the Georgian national team. It is noteworthy that Georgia, as host, will not have qualifying matches this time and will play host to the final.

Many factors have led Georgia to host the European Basketball Group Stage 2021:

Georgia played four European Championships in a row.

Basketball is a traditional sport in Georgia and is very popular among its citizens. During the matches of the Georgian national team, the Palace of Sports is full and the number of times are fixed by FIBA ​​- during the matches of one of the qualifying stages of the European and World Championship, a highest attendance was recorded.

The fact that the Basketball Federation is supported by the Government of Georgia; The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, and absolutely all the agencies that will have to be involved in organizing European Championships in various forms.

We assured the organizers that a new multifunctional sports ground will be built for the 2021 Basketball Championship in Tbilisi, on the territory of the new Digomi Sports Complex, which will fully meet the international standards and requirements of the International Basketball Federation.
