The Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Mikheil Chkhenkeli hosted the delegation of San Diego State University at Kutaisi International University, led by the President of the University, Adela della Torre.

Mikheil Chkhenkeli discussed the prospects of cooperation between the two universities with the guests and introduced them to the Ministry's policy in terms of internationalization of higher education.

Mikheil Chkhenkeli informed Adela della Torre about the establishment of the main mega-project of the Georgian education system - Kutaisi International University and noted that the author of the idea and concept of the university is Mr. Bidzina Ivanishvili. It was as a result of his and his family's extremely important contribution that a world-wide academic and scientific-research space emerged in the country.

The Minister also spoke about the importance of developing new academic programs of international standard at Kutaisi International University and noted that work is underway with foreign partners to develop new educational programs.

Mikheil Chkhenkeli noted that a Hadron therapy center will be established on the university premises. Two cyclotrons will be placed at the centre, which are manufactured and assembled by the world's leading manufacturer of cancer proton therapy equipment (IBA). The Minister emphasized that one cyclotron will be used only for scientific research, while the other will be used to treat cancer, which is especially important for children with cancer. The ultra-modern method - proton therapy - is a form of radiation therapy where the process of treating cancer-damaged cells takes place. It provides an opportunity to fight damaged cells and leave them healthy.

At the meeting, the sides discussed the enhancement of cooperation based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and San Diego State University.

Rector Alexander Tevzadze, Chancellor Magda Maghradze, Chairman of the Board of the Cartu Foundation, Niko Chkhetiani and Project Director, Vakhtang Tsagareli attended the meeting held at Kutaisi International University.
