The Minister of Education and Science of Georgia Dimitri Shashkini and Head of National Examinations Center Maia Miminoshvili held the briefing on Teachers Certification Exams.
10 000 teachers took the certification exams throughout Georgia, 6075 of them took two exams in professional skills and specialty. 1147 teachers of Georgian Language and Literature, Mathematics and Foreign Language passed the minimal competency level in both exams and will receive the status of certified teacher.
Teachers of other subjects could also take the exams. 50% of teachers took only one exam and the points they have received will be reserved and next time they will have to take only one exam. In Georgian Language and Literature 702 teachers passed the minimal level, 480 teachers passed the level in Mathematics, 1253 in foreign language and 1253 in professional skills.
If teacher couldn’t pass the minimal level, she will continue teaching and have an opportunity to take exams several times till year 2014.
Certified teachers will have higher salaries and can work as mentor teachers. They will enroll in the project “Teach for Georgia” which indicates sending certified teachers to work in the mountainous regions of Georgia, where teachers can get bonus 500 or 1000 GEL with salaries.
All current teachers should be certified till year 2014. Starting from year 2014, certified teachers will work at all schools of Georgia. This will help to improve the education quality.
