The Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Giorgi Amilakhvari, together with the Prime Minister and members of the government, decorated the memorial and paid tribute to the the victims of the April 9.
Giorgi Amilakhvari: "April 9 is a special date in the recent history of our country - it is a day which, along with the greatest pain, also creates the basis for national pride and gives us all hope for a better future.
The tragedy that happened exactly 34 years ago on this day has become a symbol of the fight for freedom and unity for every Georgian. It is our duty to do everything with joint efforts and attitude to take care of the most precious possession - the freedom of Georgia, for which our compatriots sacrificed themselves."
On April 9, 1989, in Tbilisi, the Soviet army dispersed peaceful demonstrators demanding the independence of Georgia. As a result, 21 people died and thousands of citizens were injured.
