The President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, opened a new school in the village of Melaani, in Gurjaani. The school meets the requirements of modern school construction standards.

Up to 200 schoolchildren will study in the school.

In the frame of the Einstein Program, the school is supplied with Natural Science laboratories. The cabinet of English Language also functions at the school, where a native English teacher - a participant of the TLG program - offers English language classes for the school students. The school also has a library, computer room and Civil Protection and Safety cabinet.

Currently, there are 163 schoolchildren and 28 teachers in the school. The school is also adapted to the requirements of children with special educational needs.

In the frame of his visit to the school, the President awarded the best schoolchildren the portable computers.

The Melaani school was built in 1882. The school has been in need of repair since 1998.
