A competition “Georgian Calligraphy” was organized by National Centre of Manuscripts with financial support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia. The winners were awarded and an exhibition of works was held.

The goal of the competition is to promote Georgian manuscript as a cultural phenomenon and revive Georgian calligraphy. The competition gives opportunity to the candidates, among them to those Georgians who live abroad, regardless of age, to present their talent and skills. It is noteworthy that 80% of pupils participating in the competition could move on to the final round. The jury singled out 96 works. They are uploaded to a Facebook page “Georgian Calligraphy”.  Prize-winners and nominees were selected from the 96 participants. 

The school of Georgian calligraphy has centuries-long history. Hand-written books have become a cultural and national phenomenon. Groups of scribes working in monasteries paid particular attention to the shapes of the Georgian alphabet, adorned letters and decorative elements. Hand-made works are rather expensive in different countries of the world.
