At the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia the 5th anniversary of the Office of Resource Officers of educational institutions was celebrated and the bygone period was summarized. In the framework of the event, Tamar Sanikidze awarded the resource officers that had distinguished themselves in duty status with certificates.
For the last two years Over the last two years the Office of Resource Officers underwent significant qualitative and practical changes and became established as a safety-focused institution that offers schools complex service which includes resource officers, psychological centers, professional orientation and career planning at school. Recently the following changes have been carried out at the Office of Resource Officers:
The role of the resource officer has changed significantly – nowadays they are focused on the safety of the pupil/student, teacher and administration of the educational institution, and on crime prevention. As a result, the credibility of the Office of Resource Officers has notably increased thanks to school crime rates having decreased by 21 % compared to the previous year.
Resource officers continuously learn from international experiences, raise qualifications in accordance with the local requirements and systematically receive training through new programmes. At this point, resource officers are doing their duty at 401 public schools, and 3 three private schools, two vocational schools and one academy throughout the country. However, there is also a huge demand for the Office of Resource Officers at schools where the service of resource officers is yet to be introduced.
The psychological centers operating on the basis of the Office of Resource Officers are working at full stretch: highly qualified psychologists selected through competition, social workers and child psychiatrists provide free psychosocial support service to individuals with psychological problems and behavioural disorders, as well as their family members and teachers. The psychological centers operate in Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi, Poti, Telavi and Gori. To meet current demands, similar centers are planned to be opened in Rustavi and Zugdidi.
One of the most important services provided by the Office of Resource Officers is the program of professional orientation and career planning with the purpose of helping pupils in grades 9 through 11 choose the right profession. The program has been carried out in 483 pilot schools and the result exceeded all expectations. Since the start of the program up until now, in accordance with the interests of pupils, more than 1000 expanded meetings with representatives of different professions and 750 educational trips to factories, organizations, higher educational institutions and vocational schools have been arranged.
The Office of Resource Officers intensively cooperates with international organizations, such as UNICEF, USAID, PH International and NASRO. This cooperation makes the activities effective and will continuously deepen.
