With the financial support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and assistance of the Innovations and Technology Agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Industrial Innovations Laboratory “Fablab” was organized on the basis of 14 state vocational education institutions available in Georgia.
The official opening ceremony was held at vocational college “Mermisi” in Tbilisi. The Minister of Education and Science of Georgia Aleksandre Jejelava, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Giorgi Gakharia and the Deputy Minister Ketevan Bochorishvili visited the “FabLab” and met with the students.
“FabLabs” were also opened in the vocational colleges located in the regions (Tsalenjikha, Mestia, Gurjaani, Akhaltsikhe, Batumi, Kobuleti, Kutaisi, Poti, Rustavi, Ambrolauri). Above laboratories will become members of the FabLabs network of Georgia.
The Industrial Innovations Laboratory is a unique space equipped with modern computers, programmable devices such as laser cutters, 3D printer, CNC programmable lathes, etc. In total, the students of vocational education institutions will be able to create practical works and products, with the assistance of the knowledge obtained in the institution, that will be commercialized afterwards.
The project of the Industrial Innovations Laboratory – “FabLab” was launched by the Innovations and Technology Agency of Georgia in 2014. The first laboratory was founded in Ilia State University, after which the Agency together with the Tbilisi City Hall and the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia created 22 laboratories throughout Georgia. It should be noted, that simultaneous opening of 14 FabLabs in the state vocational institutions with the financial support of the Ministry of Education and Science is an unprecedented event in the entire region. After this fact Georgia moves to the 10th place according to the number of laboratories in the world rating of FabLabs.
