The Minister of Education and Science of Georgia, Mikheil Chkhenkeli, together with members of the government, paid tribute to the memory of those killed during a peaceful rally on April 9, 1989. The minister decorated the memorial with tulips.
Mikheil Chkhenkeli: “Today, we celebrate one of the most important and turning dates in the modern history of our country. April 9 is a tragic and at the same time a prominent day - the day of our victory and freedom.
32 years ago, tens of thousands of Georgians rallied against totalitarianism to gain the most important thing a country could have – its independence. More than three decades have passed since the tragic events of April 9, yet each of us always remembers this day with great heartache and at the same time, with great pride. We are extremely grateful to those who on April 9 stood for the freedom of Georgia and sacrificed their lives for the independence of our homeland.
The heroism of each of these people will remain in our memory and in the history of the country as a proud example of devotion for future generations."
