After finishing her studies, Ana Sharadze was looking for a space where she would use the accumulated knowledge, it happened so that psychology was her main field of interest.
"While in my third year of psychology, I studied the subject of inclusive education, which made me think about how many of my classmates' needs were left behind in the system, how different the school years would be if they had an individual approach to everyone. Consequently, I decided to learn more about this system. After hearing, experiencing and seeing the present environment at schools, I decided that I should be involved in creating an interesting, motivating and caring environment for all students.” - states Ana Sharadze.
In the process of teaching, she discovered how much the environment adapts to the student and how important it is to see and evaluate these changes or achievements.
"First of all, working with children, I made sure that I was where I needed to be. I re-evaluated my views. Proper inclusive education in schools clearly shows the principles of community equality" - said the young teacher.
Anna recalls a case from school experience when a first grader was exposed to aggressive behaviour that was an inconvenience to the students. With the active intervention of the directorate, working with parents and students, the student was able to attend classes during the day, make friends with classmates and follow an individual curriculum.
"I remember the second case, a high-functioning student with autism spectrum was almost not involved in the activities of the classroom at all. After discovering his interest, which turned out to be our common interest - comics and Harry Potter, I started preparing resources on this topic. Gradually the motivation for engagement also increased and the student was already happy to complete the assignments in the resource room, and the class began to give short answers to the teacher's question. It was a great achievement, now the situation has improved and our student is more actively involved in various activities" - recalls Ana Sharadze.
During the pandemic period, she encountered difficulties in the teaching process, however she took all this as a new opportunity and with the help of the school principal and colleagues was able to deal with the pandemic difficulties.
"I need a variety of resources to work with students, to include all sensory sensations in the teaching process, to inform the teacher in the overall classroom process, how to support a student with special educational needs. During the pandemic, all these opportunities were taken away, and the knowledge of how to work with the student turned out to be useless. I had to re-learn the skills needed for a special teacher and adapt them to these flat screens, seeing all of this as a new opportunity.
We actively cooperated with the multidisciplinary team of the Ministry of Education, its members helped us to adapt the existing materials to online teaching and gave us advice to guide the process. There were also teachers who expressed a desire to learn and become an example for other teachers" - recalls the teacher.
Additionally, Ana thinks that when you decide to teach, you should not stop studying yourself. The teaching profession is a process of constant learning and sharing.
"I would like to argue about how it is better to adjust a certain topic for the students, not to the attitudes during the activity. I want us to accept each other as we are and to believe that the possibilities are endless when we take care of each other!” - says Ana Sharadze.
