130 years have passed since the birth of the famous Georgian scientist, Giorgi Eliava. 100 years ago, under his leadership, the Tbilisi Bacteriological Institute was founded, where he held the position of the Director. At the same time, from 1927 he headed the departments of TSU Hygiene, and from 1929 - the Department of Microbiology. At the same time, on the initiative of Giorgi Eliava, the Union Scientific-Research Institute of Bacteriophage was established in 1936.
Giorgi Eliava was engaged in scientific research in Paris for a thorough study of bacteria, where he worked at the Pasteur Institute from 1918 to 1921 and later, from 1925 to 1927.
Giorgi Eliava was one of the first scientists in the world to express his opinion on the reasons for the wide variability of bacteriophage microbes. During his tenure he defended the theory of the living nature of the bacteriophage, the success of which was confirmed after his death.
It should be noted that the Tbilisi Bacteriological Institute, headed by Giorgi Eliava, was the first scientific institution in the world to conduct large-scale research in the field of phage study and practical application. Bacteriophage research and phage therapy since its establishment, along with research on the development and introduction of immune and bacterial drugs, are the main activities of the Institute.
Tbilisi Bacteriological Institute is actively continuing the scientific work started by the famous microbiologist Giorgi Eliava. Many international projects are being carried out at the Institute today, which include the use of bacteriophages for the treatment, prevention, and diagnosis of diseases.
