Book Presentation and Award Ceremony took place as a part of “Week of Occupation”
The Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia has organized the contest “Episodes of Russia’s Occupation of Georgia” as part of the "Week of Occupation”.
An awards ceremony for the winning schools and a presentation of the book “Bloody August” was held on the 25th of February in the Soviet Occupation Museum. The author of the book is a twelfth grader- Avtandil Sopromadze.
Every year, in the second half of February, the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia organizes different events dedicated to the remembrance of and education about the Russian occupation of Georgia. The aim of these activities is to fully inform students about Russian aggression in 1921 and 2008. The mentioned contest was a concluding event of the “Week of Occupation” .
All public schools throughout Georgia were able to participate in the contest. Each school was allowed to submit a team of 3 or 5 students. The projects of the students were required to meet the thematic requirements of the contest.
The Jury has revealed 15 best projects. The authors of these projects then presented their projects directly to the jury. After all presentations have been completed, the three best were announced: Tbilisi public school №81, (first place); Marneuli public school №6, ( second place); Chkhorotsku public school №1 ( third place).
Schools with the best projects were awarded diplomas and prizes on February 25th at the Soviet Occupation Museum. (First place winner was awarded 2500 GEL, second and third place contestants – 1000 GEL). The team members of those schools were also presented with cash prizes.
A twelfth grader- Avtandil Sopromadze who is a student of Tbilisi Public school №48 wrote a book“Bloody August”, which was printed and published with the help of the Ministry. The book chronicles the Russian – Georgian relations from the 16th century and is compiled on the basis of the historical documents and facts. The publication will be available at the libraries of the schools.
