Representatives of education system took part in the jury moot court
Representatives of the Ministry
of Education and Science of Georgia took part in the jury moot courts at
Tbilisi Civil Court. School Teachers, Lecturers, School Principals and Resource
Officers have participated in the trial as Jury members and issued the verdict
for the grave crime against the accused. First Deputy Minister of Education and
Science of Georgia, Koka Sepherteladze attended one of the trials.
Memorandum of cooperation between the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and Tbilisi City Court was signed in 2010. According to the memorandum, schoolchildren are actively involved in the trials. This is aimed to inform the young generation about Georgian legislation as well as to prevent juvenile crime.
On October 1, 2010 new criminal procedure code entered into force, according to which one of the most democratic court systems in the world - the jury court has started operation.
As a result of PR campaign organized by the respective ministries with support of international organizations, society is fully informed about the jury court system and duties of the Jury members.
Serving on the Jury is civic duty of all individuals. Jurors are responsible for proving the accused guilty or not guilty.
Jurors are chosen randomly from the civil registry date base. According to the legislation, the Jury is composed of 12 main and 2 alternative jurors. Government officials, investigators, clerics, psychologists, psychiatrist, lawyers are not eligible to serve on the Jury.
The verdicts of the Jury rouse interest of Georgian society, as the Jury represents the common public and therefore is more likely to judge in line with generally accepted values of the society.
