The First Lady of Georgia Sandra E. Reolofs opened the two-day conference. The Minister of Education and Science, as well as the Minister of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia took participation in this conference.
The conference was held in the scope of the joint project “Introducing the Policy of 100% Tobacco Free Public Schools” initiated by National Curriculum and Assessment Center of the Ministry of Education and Science and the National Center for Public Health. The representatives of different institutions and organizations were actively involved in the working process.
The project lasted for several months. 8 discussions were carried out in Tbilisi, Batumi, Zugdidi, Kutaisi and Sighnaghi in June and September, 2009. The participants of these discussions were the principles of 100 public schools from Tbilisi, Ajara, Samegrelo, Zemo Svaneti, Imereti, Kakheti regions, as well as the representatives of the Educational Resource Centers, National Curriculum and Assessment Center of the Ministry of Education and Science, National Center for Education Accreditation and Teacher Professional Education Center.
The discussions revealed smoking problems existing at schools. Different opinions were expressed about Introducing the Policy of 100% Tobacco Free Public Schools by the principles and the representatives of the Resource Centers.
The guidelines of Introducing the Policy of 100% Tobacco Free Public Schools were presented at the conference.
The meetings on Introducing the Policy of 100% Tobacco Free Public School will continue in the future.
