In order to ensure life-long learning, the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia is implementing educational program in penitentiary system. Within the Program, a memorandum was signed in April of the current year between the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and the Ministry of Corrections and Legal Assistance of Georgia. According to the Memorandum, for the first time this year, juveniles as well as adult inmates are able to pass high school exams outside the penitentiary establishment, namely, in Tbilisi №123 Public School. They will be provided with appropriate environment for this purpose.
Eight inmates will pass the exams this year. Two of them are pre-trial inmates.
Before signing the Memorandum, the issue giving inmates opportunity to pass exams depended on goodwill of the Ministry of Corrections and Legal Assistance. It is important to notice that this year, Penitentiary Department responded immediately to the appeal of the Ministry of Education regarding the issue.
Within the Program initiated by the Ministry of Education and Science, all inmates who express their desire to study are provided with appropriate conditions. This is the result of effective inter-agency cooperation.
