World Autism Awareness Day is celebrated on the 2nd of April. Minister of Education and Science of Georgia Tamar Sanikidze visited pupils with autism spectrum disorders in Public School 166 and presented gifts to them.
In 2013 integrated class for pupils with autism spectrum disorders was opened. Up to 10 pupils with special educational needs receive education with the use of special educational methodology. The educational program is based on National Curriculum and is adapted to the needs and requirements of children with autism spectrum disorders.
Integrated class is equipped with auxiliary teaching resources, visual aids and inventory. A teacher, a special teacher, an assistant teachers, a psychologist and a nurse were selected as a result of a contest.
Inclusive education represents one of the priorities of the education system. Coming out from the abovementioned, the Ministry is implementing a number of important projects, among them is “Inclusive Education Promotion Program”. Besides, a special teacher is appointed by the Ministry in every school of the regions where there is even one pupil with special educational needs. Implementation of inclusive education in vocational education started in 2013. This will enable people with special educational needs to acquire vocation and get employed.
