Minister of Education and Science of Georgia Tamar Sanikidze and Deputy Minister Giorgi Sharvashidze visited Samtskhe - Javakheti State University. They met with the faculty and surveyed the area where rehabilitation of a hotel-type dormitory fort the University students and teachers shall start in the near future. The project will be funded by the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia.
Within the projects for higher education institutions infrastructure development, the rehabilitation of regional institutions of higher education is a priority fort the Ministry. Among these institutions is Samtskhe - Javakheti State University founded in 1990. It has been functioning as a State university since 2013.
The University buildings are located in Akhaltsikhe and Akhalkalaki . Today, business administration and Georgian philology bachelor educational programs of Samtskhe - Javakheti State University are carried out in Akhalkalaki. Javakheti is experiencing a severe shortage of teachers speaking the Official Language. It is planned to carry out bachelor education programs of elementary level education, teacher training educational programs, electricians and welders’ vocational educational programs and preparation of qualified cadres for veterinary and agricultural services.
These vocational programs shall encourage flow of students and young people from different regions to Akhalkalaki. However, the University's dormitory is completely destroyed today. Communications engineering (water supply, sewage, heating, electricity, gas networks) are damaged.
Teachers and professors go to Akhalkalaki from Akhaltsikhe every day because of lack of qualified academic personnel. Proper living conditions shall be provided at modern dormitory for the academic personnel.
