Organized by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, the Summary of Sports Events of 2019 – was held at the Palace of State Ceremonies. At the annual awards ceremony, the winners were nominated for 11 nominations and awarded with 10 special prizes.
The Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia - Mikheil Chkhenkeli warded the national Water Polo team with the title of being the best national team of Georgia in 2019. Evidently, the team has secured the grand final of the European Championship for the fourth time in a row. The Minister also gave a special prize to the best veteran athlete of the year, Nona Gaprindashvili, who became the world champion among veteran chess players last year.
Mikheil Chkhenkeli: “The results of the 2019 sports season are truly impressive. Over 1,200 medals at international tournaments, European and world championships, 6 world champions in Olympic sports, 7 gold, 9 silver and 14 bronze medals and sixth place in the overall team medal at the second European Games. Our major challenge is the XXXII Summer Olympics to be held in Tokyo in 2020. The Ministry, in close cooperation with the National Olympic Committee and sports organizations and with the unconditional support of the Government of Georgia, will do its utmost to present the Georgian delegation in Tokyo with dignity.
