On July 16, 2024, Giorgi Amilakhvari, the Minister of Education, Science, and Youth Affairs of Georgia, accompanied by Deputy Minister Nodar Papukashvili, visited the Institute of Bacteriophagy, Microbiology, and Virology, as well as the Ivane Beritashvili Biomedicine Center. During the visit, the Minister explored the infrastructure of these research institutes and gained insights into their ongoing scientific research activities.
The Tbilisi Bacteriological Institute, founded by Giorgi Eliava, was the world’s first institution to conduct large-scale research on bacteriophages. Since its establishment, the institute has focused on bacteriophage research and phage therapy, as well as the development of immune and antibacterial medications. It continues to advance the scientific legacy of its founder and is actively involved in numerous international projects aimed at using bacteriophages for disease prevention and diagnosis.
The Ivane Beritashvili Institute of Physiology serves as a research center with departments in neurophysiology, biochemistry, biophysics, radiobiology, and various other laboratories staffed by internationally recognized scientists. Their research and discoveries are frequently published in prestigious foreign scientific journals. The scientists at the center also collaborate actively with international counterparts, universities, and clinical research institutions.
