On July 4, 2024, the Board of Rectors convened at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, led by Giorgi Amilakhvari, the Minister of Education, Science, and Youth Affairs of Georgia. Rectors and representatives from both public and private universities across Georgia participated in the meeting.
The agenda included a summary of the reforms and results from the 2023-2024 academic year, highlighting several key initiatives:
- Doubling the number of scholarships and increasing the amount of state scholarships
- Addressing the debt of students with status-stopped enrollment
- Implementing measures to enhance student access
- Introducing a three-year undergraduate program
- Participation in international exhibitions
- Supporting the international accreditation of programs
- Launching the Second International Excellence School in Batumi
- Establishing a Competitive Innovation Fund (CIF)
- Developing a new model for higher education financing
- Implementing various legislative changes, including those related to remote teaching
Additionally, the meeting addressed current issues related to authorization and accreditation, as well as the results of recent monitoring activities. Quality assurance mechanisms for doctoral education programs were also discussed.
Participants had the opportunity to raise topical issues and receive direct insights from the Minister regarding their areas of interest. The Board members emphasized that meetings in this format are essential for effectively implementing ongoing higher education reforms and enhancing engagement among rectors. They noted that the Rector's Board provides an excellent platform for coordinated efforts with the Ministry and stressed the importance of maintaining active collaboration in this regard.
The meeting also included contributions from Alexander Tsuladze, the First Deputy Minister of Education, Science, and Youth Affairs of Georgia; Nodar Papukashvili, the Deputy Minister; and Maya Khajishvili, the Minister of Education, Culture, and Sport of Adjara.
It is worth noting that, at the Minister's initiative, meetings with university leaders will become a permanent feature to facilitate effective decision-making on addressing existing challenges. These meetings will continue in the future and will be held at all authorized public and private universities throughout Georgia.
